Hi Claudi
Yes… you can use them now or in any stage of the drying process 🙂
They will get harder with time if they are left dry, since more moisture will evaporate.
But they always reactivate really well if you put a few drops of water on them before each painting session.
Hope that helps!

Thank you for such a thorough article about making your own halfpans.
I have recently put Daniel Smith watercolor into half pans, and they have been drying for almost a week now, but they are not rock hard, they are a bit rubbery but completely dry. Wil they ever get harder, and is it OK to use them as they are now?

Claudi

Hi Kay
I only label the pans on the underside of the plastic tub so that I can identify them when it’s time to refill.
Otherwise I usually swatch out the colors on a small sheet of watercolor paper in the correct order – you can keep this separate and use it as a reference to locate colors in the palette 🙂

I’ve been using a set of Paul Rubens 1/2 pans and made a card to go in the top. Works but uses up pallet space I could use for mixing. I’ve ordered an new case and blank pans arriving tomorrow! I’m attending a workshop out in San Diego and the leader has a suggested color list.
I know you said use a sharpie, but on a tri-fold case with brush space (don’t use) in-between the pans where would you label?
