Hi Tricia
I think it would depend how dark the original painted colors are.
You might have to apply several coats to make the surface “white” again…

New hobby of mine and I’m loving it – so far just experimenting. I have two large canvases that were already painted with acrylics, but have a smooth surface. Would it be possible to apply gesso or ground to this type of surface and watercolor over it?

Hi Terri
I’m not sure what the fixing properties of watercolor canvas are (if on normal watercolor paper you don’t need to use a fixative).
But if you notice the color lifts of the canvas easily, you could try using a standard artists fixative spray like this one. (Amazon)

It does sound like a lot of fun and I’ll be grounding everything in my home to experiment. Great tutorial. I really like your sample pieces as well because they are blue, my favourite color of all time. Vie from Vancouver Canada

Hi Michele
The ground is quite absorbent. It tries to replicate the way paper absorbs pigment, but the workability is quite different if you’re accustomed to watercolor paper.
It’s definitely worth trying šŸ™‚ You can do some fun things
cheers
